Word of Caution

The Hellfire Torch Coral is an Indonesian torch coral colour morph that is very popular among hobbyists and collectors. It has long flowing tentacles similar to other Indonesian torch corals and grows in a branching structure. Its tentacles are half gold, half purple with a green stripe near the base. The tips of the tentacles are either pink or purple, and it is widely considered one of the most colourful torch corals. It is a colonial coral and grows through splitting, with a single head slowly dividing into two.

The “Hellfire” name was hobbyist-created and can be somewhat subjective in the trade — the most common definition describes pink/light purple tips with tentacles that are half orange and half purple with green stripes near the base.

Defining Characteristics

Its tentacles are half gold, half purple with a green stripe near the base. The tips of the tentacles are either pink or purple.

The most common trade definition describes pink/light purple tips, with tentacles that are half orange and half purple, with green stripes near the base.

Important Caveat

The “Hellfire” name was hobbyist-created and can be somewhat subjective in the trade. No two pieces are alike and the variant identity can differ between sellers.

In summary, the three things to look for are:

• Bi-colour tentacles — gold/orange on one half, purple on the other
• Green striping near the base of the tentacles
• Pink or light purple tips

If a coral doesn’t show all three of those traits, it may be mislabelled. Because the name is hobbyist-created and not a regulated classification, it’s worth asking the vendor for a clear photo under white light, not just blue/actinic, before purchasing.

Hammers, Torches, and Frogspawn (Euphyllia sp.) do not require as much light as some other corals. It can be kept under normal output fluorescents without much difficulty. In some cases, Torches may extend more readily under subdued lighting, however it may display more attractive colors when placed under stronger lighting.

Moderate to strong water movement is recommended. One of the main draws to this type of LPS coral is how it sways in the current. Water flow is both healthy for the coral and is pleasing aesthetically.

Like most coral, Euphyllia rely to a large extent on the products of their zooxanthellae, however, in our experience, they also benefit from direct feeding. Hammers, torches, and frogspawn do not seem to aggressively feed like other LPS, so finding the right food can be a challenge. We have had some good luck with a dry pellet food called Sustainable Aquatics Hatchery Diet. It is intended for use with small fish, but we have tried feeding it to corals like the Euphyllias, which tend to be finicky eaters, with good results.

Proper acclimation is extremely important considering the stress imposed on the animals by the shipping process.

Corals developed all kinds of adaptations to gain a competitive advantage in the battle for real estate on the reef. In our home aquariums we have to be conscious of these in order to create the best environment for them long term. Euphyllia are one of the corals that extends long sweeper tentacles. Sweeper tentacles are often used as a means of defense against other encroaching coral colonies. Their white tips contain a concentration of nematcysts that can damage more delicate tank mates. Most of the time, this is not a major problem but to be safe, we recommend placing it in a location far from other corals initially.

The video below provides an overview of the different manifestations of coral aggression and ideas on how to mitigate some of the risks inherent in keeping corals in close quarters.
