Acropora carduus is a striking SPS species best known for its thick, club-shaped branches and bold, spiky presence. It’s less common than tenuis or millepora, which makes a healthy specimen a real standout in an SPS-dominant reef.
🌿 Description
-
Growth form:
Forms robust, upright branches that are short to medium in length, often appearing chunky and compact rather than delicate. Colonies grow into a dense, corymbose structure with a strong, armored look. -
Corallites:
Very large, flared radial corallites that project outward prominently, giving the coral a thorny or starburst texture. Axial corallites are thick and blunt, reinforcing the heavy, muscular appearance. -
Coloration:
Naturally occurs in creams, tans, and browns, but in reef aquariums it can develop:
- Deep greens and teals
- Purple or blue branch tips
-
Contrasting lighter corallite lips
Under high-quality lighting, the texture casts dramatic shadows that enhance depth. -
Polyps:
Short to moderate polyp extension. Not as “fuzzy” as millepora, but healthy colonies still show clear PE, especially during the day in stable systems.
