In the wild, juvenile fish live cryptically amongst Acropora corals. Generally peaceful but can be territorial with their own kind or similar-shaped species. Never keep more than one in the same tank as bickering and subsequent ostracitoxin release is very likely to occur. Tank mates must be peaceful so as not to harass the boxfish. A species-only setup is highly recommended.

Origin:
Found in the Indo-Pacific region, from the east coast of Africa to the central Pacific Ocean. They inhabit clear lagoons, coral reef slopes, rubble areas, and grassy flats, typically at depths of 1 to 50 metres.

Diet:
Omnivore. When first introduced, the Cubicus Boxfish prefers a diet of live brine shrimp or bloodworms. Once acclimated, the diet should include chopped squid, clams, mussels, and herbivore preparations.

Reef Safe: ❌ Not Reef Safe

These fish have impressive teeth used to scrape algae, tunicates, and sponges off rocks, along with various bivalves and snails — Yellow Boxfish are not suited to reef tanks. They will often nibble at tubeworms.

Characteristics:

⚠️ CRITICAL WARNING:
Yellow Boxfish release ostracitoxin when stressed, threatened, or dying. This neurotoxin can kill every fish in your tank within hours. In the wild this toxin disperses harmlessly in the vast ocean, but in closed aquarium systems it becomes concentrated and lethal. It is recommended to keep a large supply of clean, heated, and aerated saltwater on hand at all times so that if ostracitoxin release is suspected, a massive water change can be performed immediately.

• Distinctive cube-shaped body with bright yellow coloration and brown spots as juveniles. Adults develop more subdued brown coloration while maintaining their characteristic box shape. Can reach up to 18 inches in adulthood and has a lifespan of 10–15 years with proper care.
• Requires a minimum 125-gallon aquarium with large areas to swim and an abundance of rocky caves and crevices suitable for such a large species to retreat into.
• Requires expert-level care — not suitable for beginner or intermediate aquarists.
• Despite their less-than-nimble locomotion, Yellow Boxfish are capable of jumping from open-topped tanks — a tight-fitting lid is essential.
• Recommended water conditions: 72–78°F, dKH 8–12, pH 8.1–8.4, salinity 1.020–1.025

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0668/5553/4701/files/FullSizeRender_cb48bfb5-3c3f-4963-9586-aca1b216ea57.jpg?v=1781444234
