Best kept in harems with one dominant male and several females, mimicking their natural behaviour and helping reduce aggression within the group. Males may display territorial behaviour toward other males, especially in smaller tanks. Carberryi anthias is one of the more aggressive anthias species toward other anthias — they do best if kept alone or with another friendlier anthias species in a large aquarium. The male should be the last to be introduced into the aquarium. May jump out of uncovered aquariums.

Origin:
Originates from the reefs of the Maldives. Also found around the Seychelles in the Indian Ocean, often in large schools hovering above coral reefs.

Diet:
Carnivore. Will eat most regular aquarium foods — finely chopped frozen or fresh meaty foods such as mysis, squid, fish flesh, shrimp, and clam. Should be offered at least twice daily, dispensed upstream so water currents carry food to their location. Sometimes difficult to get feeding initially — fortified live adult brine shrimp may be necessary to get them started.

Reef Safe: ✅ Reef Safe

This species is 100% reef safe and usually won’t touch even the smallest ornamental shrimp.

Characteristics:

• The male has a yellow body with a purple field stretching over the lower half of the body from the upper part of the head to the bottom of the tail fin peduncle. Females are orange-yellow in colour.
• Males display more vivid coloration and elongated dorsal and caudal fin filaments. All individuals are born female — the dominant individual in a group will transition to male (protogynous hermaphrodites).
• Best kept in a school of one male to 3–8 females. Provide plenty of hiding places, strong water motion, and quality water.
• Should only be introduced to well-established aquariums. Can sometimes have a hard time acclimatising — the presence of another anthias species can make the process easier.
• Very active and naturally helps draw out shier fish that share the aquarium. Tends to occupy the midwater region of the tank.
• Minimum tank size: 70 gallons (265 litres)
• Water parameters: pH 8.1–8.4, salinity 1.020–1.025, temperature 72–78°F (22–26°C)
• Only occasionally available in the trade — may require ordering through a local fish store or online
